Description

PVC Stem Nipple – Male BSP x Plain Spigot

The PVC Stem Nipple provides a compact connection between a female BSP threaded component and an imperial PVC solvent weld socket. Featuring a male BSP thread at one end and a plain PVC spigot at the other, it is particularly useful when connecting threaded valves, pumps or equipment directly into PVC fittings.

Unlike a conventional socket adaptor, the plain stem is designed to fit into a compatible imperial solvent weld socket. This can help produce a neat, space-saving transition between threaded equipment and PVC pressure pipework.

Build your system using our Imperial PVC Pipe and use a suitable PVC Adhesive & Cleaner when making solvent weld joints.

Stem Nipple Features

  • Male BSP threaded connection
  • Plain imperial PVC spigot / stem
  • Designed to fit directly into a compatible solvent weld socket
  • Useful for compact threaded-to-solvent weld transitions
  • Corrosion-resistant PVC construction
  • No specialist installation tools required
  • WRAS approved
  • Suitable for potable drinking water applications

Where Are PVC Stem Nipples Used?

Stem nipples are a practical choice when a female BSP threaded connection needs to be introduced directly into a PVC solvent weld fitting. Typical installations include water treatment equipment, filtration systems, pumps, valves, irrigation systems, swimming pool pipework and other PVC pressure applications.

Imperial PVC Pipe Size Guide

Imperial PVC sizes are based on nominal bore, so the stated inch size is not the actual outside diameter of the pipe. For example, 2" imperial PVC pipe has an outside diameter of approximately 60.3mm.

The table below shows the corresponding outside diameter for each common imperial PVC pipe size.

Imperial Pipe Size Outside Diameter
1/2" 21.4 mm
3/4" 26.7 mm
1" 33.6 mm
1 1/4" 42.2 mm
1 1/2" 48.3 mm
2" 60.3 mm
2 1/2" 75.2 mm
3" 88.9 mm
4" 114.3 mm

BSP Male Thread Size Guide

BSP sizes are also nominal. Measuring the outside diameter of a male BSP thread will therefore give a larger measurement than the stated BSP size. Use the dimensions below as a guide when identifying an existing threaded connection.

BSP Thread Size Approx. Male Thread Diameter
1/2" 21.0 mm
3/4" 26.4 mm
1" 33.2 mm
1 1/4" 41.9 mm
1 1/2" 47.8 mm
2" 59.6 mm
2 1/2" 75.2 mm
3" 87.9 mm
4" 113.0 mm

Pressure & Temperature

Imperial PVC solvent weld fittings from 1/2" to 8" are rated up to 15 bar (215 psi) at 20°C. PVC threaded fittings from 1/2" to 4" are rated up to 12 bar (170 psi) at 20°C.

Permissible working pressure decreases as the operating temperature rises. PVC pressure systems should not be used at temperatures above 60°C.

Standards & Potable Water

Imperial solvent weld PVC fittings are generally manufactured in accordance with EN 1452-3, with threaded fittings manufactured to applicable BSP thread standards.

The fittings are WRAS approved and suitable for use in potable drinking water systems.

Making the Connection

The plain stem should be solvent welded into a correctly sized PVC socket using an appropriate cleaner and solvent cement. Correct preparation of both surfaces is important for producing a reliable joint. View our range of PVC glues and cleaners for suitable jointing products.

The male BSP thread should be sealed using a suitable thread seal such as PTFE tape or an appropriate sealing compound. Take care not to overtighten PVC threaded connections.
